This is the first edition and first critical edition of the Notturno for orchestra composed by Ottorino Respighi in 1907. Long considered lost, the Notturno is listed as P 074 in the official catalogue edited by Potito Pedarra. The piece was premiered on January 6th, 1908, at the Metropolitan Theatre in New York, under the baton of Rodolfo Ferrari. The composition enjoyed a brief circulation, but disappeared from the concert programs during the First World War. Respighi reused the opening part of the Notturno in 1910 in his opera Semirâma, in the sixth scene of the third act. It its operatic version, however, the Notturno lacks its central parts and features a different tempo marking, due to the nature of the stage work and of the vocal accompaniment. To our knowledge, the Notturno for orchestra by Ottorino Respighi was left unpublished until the present edition.
This edition is prepared on the basis of the unique surviving sources of score and instrumental parts. The full score and all the string parts are in the hand of a copyist, while, by contrast, all the woodwind parts and the brass parts are autograph, having been written by Respighi himself rather than by a copyist.
A distinctive feature of the Notturno is the use of the alto saxophone, which in 1907 was still a relatively recent invention, little used outside France and the United States, and considered an avant-garde instrument. The Composer provided for the possible substitution of the alto saxophone with an english horn, and wrote with his hand the two distinct orchestra parts. Both orchestra parts are available and included in the present edition.

Questa è la prima edizione ed edizione critica realizzata del Notturno per orchestra composto da Ottorino Respighi nel 1907, considerato perduto, e indicato nel catalogo curato da Potito Pedarra come P 074. Il brano fu eseguito per la prima volta il 6 gennaio 1908 al Metropolitan Theatre di New York sotto la direzione di Rodolfo Ferrari, e godette di una discreta circolazione negli anni immediatamente successivi, ma scomparve dai pubblici concerti subito dopo la prima guerra mondiale. Parti del Notturno furono riutilizzate dallo stesso Respighi nel 1910 nell’opera Semirâma, nella sesta scena del terzo atto. Nella veste operistica tuttavia il brano fu privato della parte centrale, e reca diverse indicazioni di tempo per motivi scenici e d’accompagnamento delle voci. Il Notturno per orchestra era inedito fino alla presente pubblicazione.
L’edizione è stata redatta sulla base dell’unico testimone disponibile della partitura e delle parti staccate. La partitura completa non è autografa ma è opera di copista, così come le parti degli archi. Invece, tutte le parti dei legni e degli ottoni sono autografe, redatte proprio da Respighi e non da un copista.
Una particolarità contraddistingue questa versione che prevede l’uso del Sassofono contralto, il quale, nel 1907, era ancora uno strumento di recente invenzione, raffinatamente d’avanguardia, poco utilizzato al di fuori dalla Francia e dagli Stati Uniti. L’Autore stesso prevede la possibile sostituzione del Sassofono contralto, qualora non disponibile, con il Corno inglese, come avviene nella versione incorporata in Semirâma. Si noti che entrambe le parti staccate, del Sassofono e del Corno inglese, sono autografe. Per agevolarne l’esecuzione nelle diverse situazioni, entrambe le parti sono fornite nella presente edizione.
